With the new gym there is a bar at the bottom of the crew profile. This bar represents the total capacity of each character to train and improve. The value is the sum of all the improvements, which include (for now); HP, attack, ability and stamina (this is how far he can run). So for a hero, who has 90 points, you can spread your training to improve the areas that will help the most. So for instance a Xin has an ability of 50. With a training boost, you could have an additional 20%, so he should have a new value of 60! You have to decide what helps you the most for each crew. However, there is a chance that the crew won't get the full maximum value from the training. See gym stats for the max value for each exercise. The best way to get as close to those values is to train at higher levels, since these provide more directed efforts towards the goal. However, it might be best to figure what you want for each crew. There is a display issue, where HP and ability displays only in whole numbers, and attack goes up only in tenths. However, it seems that the effect is applied regardless of how it displays.

Forgot to mention, you need to leave your gym accessible. The crew that is training, will still go on to battle. So if you stick the gym in a unconnected part of your ship, you will be loosing two crew members you could had used

Found that the profile window has display restrictions towards numbers, but the effect is applied regardless of that
