You just got your first ship and you want to burn fuel trying it out. PVP at this level is a breeze, and you can wait to upgrade it to level 3, but wait. There are several room to upgrade first and you need to build a crew (and level them up). If you upgrade, you might have a harder time as with a level 3 ship.
The first thing you need is to max out all your rooms. This is usually is good gauge of when you are ready for the next level. Also, your crew has to reach 4 times your ship level to max out. At level two that is 8+ (you will work them until they are ready for level 9, though you won't be able to level them up). I found that you can reach Silver Plus league with no effort. Around 1250-1280, you will find that you are more than ready, and most of your targets will only provide 1 cup
Below is the image of a ship and configuration I used. There are no collectors and no engine. The reason is that you get all the resources you need from battles, and as I said PVP is a breeze. You don't need an engine, since most ships won't have missiles, and it draws too much power. With this setup, I power fully all weapons, and just warmed my shield.
Note that all active rooms (those with the green bars) are connected and accessible to all crew members, so they can repair any damages. Also, I added as much armor as I could to all the active rooms, giving special priority to the reactor. Reactors at this level are probably a primary target (at least to me )
This is an easy level, where you ought not to loose any battles if you follow these recommendations. Place your crew in the laser room, this will give you a slight advantage firing. Aim your weapons at the reactor room, and keep an eye on your ship.
You can see all the important things about your ship but your crew's health (so it ought be good to peek at your ship from time to time). You have the reactor's output on the tall ocher bar on the left. The bottom yellow bars next to each system charge (they green rising fill) is the power consumption and status of each room. If the bar gets smaller, the room was hit and took damage. So go back an fix it.
On the top left is your shield's charge and your hull or ships HP. This is how you kill ships, by bringing the hp to zero. The best way at this level is to target only the reactor. This will disable everything else and lower your damage from his weapons.
Mind you you can do everything right and still lose. You need to keep an eye on the clock, which counts down from 3 minutes. If you run out of time, you lose. So if you fire at a really well armored room, it might take a long time to destroy and you will lose. Don't think this happens at this level, you something you need to know. If that is the case, then choose a different room.
You will want to continue practicing this at all levels. Work on getting new crew all the time, since there are usually better characters. While battling for resources to max out my rooms, I constantly filled my mineral storage. The best way to use minerals, once you don't have any room to upgrade, is the mineral crew draw. You should see a unique (the best crew you can get from minerals) about once every 5 or 10 draws. A good unique will be even rarer. So you will need to draw a lot of bad characters, before you have a decent crew manning your ship.
You can easily access it through the face on the status bar (when not battling) on the left side (under the bux and above the mineral icons). Click it, and then click recruit. If you need recommendations about crew, look at Starting Crew
Something you should try to do whenever you upgrade your ship, is to have a full haul of resources before you get your new ship. You can see that with only 21 seconds to go, my storage are overflowing with resources. The reason is that you will be a small fry with your new ship. All your weapons and crew will be at the minimum for that level, so you will have a hard time gathering resources to upgrade or buy rooms. All those savings will allow your ship to win your battles again.

Some ideas to keep in mind
- Train your crew at the gym. Your crew are who keep your ship running, so try to get the best crew you can
- Don't isolate your gym. Those training can still fight, but not if they can't reach the other rooms
- Save your bux. Don't spend any at this level. You will need as much as you can find at level 3
