A good way to get your crew killed, is to have them wait for the lift while the room is being bombarded.
I like to add a non active room (those without bars) next to the lift, so the crew can wait there in safety. Usually, you can't because of lack of space, but it is a great way to prevent damage.
Good rooms for this are resource collectors, since they are small and non active. So if you have them onboard, that is probably the best spot.
Also if your ship requires interconnecting lifts and these are only one room apart, the bedroom/alliance/storage are good
However, I rarely do because not enough space

Here is an example of two concepts. The lift buffer and targeting selection. In the first battle I lost, because the crew died waiting for the lift. In the second I won, because the crew entered from the left and had a safe place to escape. The only change between both, is I switch the laser room from the left side to the middle (between the two reactors). The AI, targeted that room, in both cases. If this holds true, you can select where to place those rooms that might be targeted for better access and shielding. Not sure if it is only the purchasing order, or the way you place them in your ship This might help, when using a AI that targets only one of your rooms. Giving you a better chance to survive. Also, notice the difference of the HP in both images!
