If you read the squids article on DPS, they don't like the turrets. The damage isn't that high compared to other weapons, and take damage too easily. However, they have an important benefit at low levels, they help break the shield. To break through a shield, you need to hit it repeatedly, otherwise it recharges and becomes active.
Most of the top players in level 10 ships don't carry them. There are some exceptions, but don't ditch them until your lasers and cannons can deal enough damage to keep the shield inactive. Hangar's crafts also help at this.
Watch your replays taking special attention at the shield and how it absorbs hits and recharges. Any shot absorbed by the shield, is one less hit at crew or room.
Lastly, don't forget to add armor to your turrets. Anything you add touching a side helps; the more, the better. This is what makes ship layout difficult, too many compromises. So put on your engineer cap, and start doing compromises in your design.
