This is something that is rarely discussed as by the time you decide on your captain and ship, you can't change your mind without starting fresh.
We are going to break it down for you to help you out.
CAPTAINS
The first decision you'll need to make when you create your new Pixel Starships account is to choose a captain. After selecting either a male or female captain, you'll be presented with three choices. Regardless of whether your captain is male or female, you'll choose between a captain who is “Awesome” (Asian), “Sexy” (White), or a “Million Bux” (Black). The character’s stats and special abilities are different for each captain, so this may be a factor you'll want to consider when choosing your sex and race.
Many players stop using their captain fairly quickly, since most of the captains have fairly weak stats compared to other crew members which can be found in mineral and beer draws. Suggestions for finding a good set of crew members will be available in a later section of the guide.
You can compare the statistics for your captain to those of other characters at orions.boards.net/page/crew.
Captains are special characters (available only from Savy). Like all three star (unique) or better characters, they come with a special ability, which is unlocked when they reach level 10. Each captain has a different special ability. All of these abilities have their uses, but some will be more useful in the early part of the game. You will want to staff your ship with a good mix of crew who have a variety of different special abilities to get the best results.
Most of the captains’ powers are average or below average when compared to other crew with the same ability. The only exceptions are Bobby (rush) or Laura (hacker). Due to their above average ability skill many players continue using Bobby or Laura even at mid level play.
A crew member is able to use their special ability only once during a battle. Using artificial intelligence (AI) is the recommended method of triggering special abilities, but this won’t be possible until you’ve built a command room. Basic AI will be covered in a later section of this guide. Until you are able to use AI, you can trigger a special ability by double tapping on the crew member. Since special powers need to meet some conditions before they can be used, you will see a character glowing when (s)he is able to use the power.
Special abilities can be classified as either damage or repair. In addition, some special abilities can be classified as defensive (used on your starship) while others are classified as offensive (used on your opponent’s ship) and still others can be used as either.
SHIPS/FACTION
Once you've chosen your captain and (s)he has a name, you'll be asked to pick a faction. There are currently three factions available to starting players: pirate, federation and Qtarian. It is important that you make this choice carefully, since you cannot change factions later. Regardless of which faction you choose the gameplay and missions are identical, but the interior design for each type of ship is different. Because each ship type has strengths and weaknesses based on the interior design, you may want to consider more than the coolness factor of the ship's exterior, especially if this will be your first account.
This part of the account creation process might be a little confusing, because you are asked to select a “job” rather than a faction. If you don't pay close attention you might not even realize that you're being given a choice at all. When you reach the “select job” screen (you will see one large ship, and two smaller ones in the background, see images below), you can swipe to switch between the three ship designs. Once you've made your final selection hit “Ok” and you're off to the tutorial.
Some characteristics for each design are described here:
Federation – It is an elongated ship, with usually the harder part to set up on the aft (rear) of the ship. Many users find this an easy design in general.
Pirate – Also an elongated design, but the aft is three decks tall, creating a shallow section midship. Some users have trouble when dealing with this area. However, the general design makes it easy to set up the bow (front) and aft sections.
Qtarian – More of a vertical ship, which requires lifts. Most players have a harder time working with the lifts and using the space efficiently. It is a versatile ship, but cumbersome to lay out.
Important note: As soon as you've finished the tutorial it's a very good idea to register your account, especially if you're creating an alternate (alt) account. If you accidentally click on the login button to return to your main account before registering the new account (or just by accident) you run the risk of losing your shiny new account and witty new player name. You can only have one account associated with a particular email address, so if you create an alt account you will need to use an alternate email address to register your new account.
Once you have selected a ship design, you will begin the game’s tutorial. The tutorial will help guide you through some basic elements of the game. If you forget some of what you learned during the tutorial, don’t worry - this guide covers most of the same information.
