Spent the past week trying to redo my crew's AI. Only changed their code, not the weapons nor layout. Tried several ideas, from small changes to entire new concepts. Some of the changes were minor compared to the previous version. However, those small changes compounded and would give very different results. The battle went from my owning them, to losing after a few moments.
Battled several ships from very tough ones to ones that I could beat with hardly any hp loss. Yet, with some AI, those easy ships killed me and the tough ones obliterated me With decent AI, my ship beat those easy ship though with a large hp drop. Finally with good AI, my ship didn't get much damage. Still those tweaks made big differences. The changes can be from an extra code line, a different position for a line, or even the crew moved to a different room. Any of these could affect how crew respond to the room under fire.
In essence the changes would affect which crew would show up to repair the damage. Be it that the order was changed because the crew would or not respond to the damage. So the moral of the story is, it is crew and their AI that keep your alive. Weapons might help you kill your opponent, but if you don't last enough you won't even manage to have draw.
The top ships are there, because they can keep you from damaging their ships. So you have to figure all the components, in order to repair the damage as fast as you can. Even if you don't have weapons you shouldn't die, but keep the battle going until the clock runs out.
You will encounter ships that are simply too strong for you, but with a good repair AI, you should be able to take on many more ships. The current state of PSS, forces you into getting toys to compete against the top players. However, unless you are there, a good AI will do much better than any amount your opponent has in toys.
You are trying to minimize the damage, and this requires that you have strong crew with good repair stats and lots of HP helps. However, you don't want your crew running all over the place. This will tire them down, and soon won't be able to reach the room in time. So figure how to get your crew to the damaged room, so they can repair it fast. Leaving the room helps, especially if your opponent doesn't have an ion cannon.
Having several crew repair the room helps, but only if they don't stay in the room too long, otherwise all your crew will die together. This will keep you from getting too much damage, but you might find yourself without anyone at the end of the battle, and your ship going down in flames.
I found that most changes that work for me are evolutionary. I keep tweaking upon my ship to get thing to work a little better each time. There have been some revolutionary changes, but those don't happen too often. There are too many things that interact, so it is difficult to do major changes without running into the possibility of messing up your ship. I have broken my ship too many times, but it helps to have something to go back in case that happens. So do take notes before
You live longer by not dying
