Seems to me there are essentially two strategies battling each other here... The in thing seems to be teleports and epic heroes, often combined with hangers (and of course the usual lasers and missiles but they are not the main focus). The other school of thought is the missile team. I have gone the missile route, researched AP missiles and got good lasers etc. it works really well - except against those with epic crew, teleports and usually good hangers, small craft. I have got the craft covered, good AA deals ok with that, and/or EMP on the hangers first up to slow them down. But damn teleports !...
So, I pick my battles.. if I see a hanger symbol, I scan and if they have a good teleport and high crew, I move on. If not I take them on and usually win. My plan is based on going for AP missiles with high hull damage. First up focus on taking down the shields with rockets and all lasers, then move onto reactors and switch to AP missiles to maximise haul damage. I often beat seemingly stronger ships this way.. As long as I pick them well. No teleports and weak hangers I can do... Now I just need to work on how to stop the damn teleporters.
Anyway, off to research lvl 5 AP missiles, and any comments welcome.

It works if you specialize, since it is almost impossible to do all research. Between the time and cost, it is a bit prohibitive. Did you saw the fights with Attack Sheep and Sourdeeds? They went for just a few weapons and transporters. If you aren't going to have transporters, you need to have strong crew that can deal with most boarders. They'll need critical attack or poison gas. The trick is getting them to the right room before the boarder, otherwise you take too much damage. Besides getting heroes and leveling them up, you will need a good AI to beat them. Mind you not all go for the reactors Having a remote attack helps a lot. Don't scan them, but take a look at the outside of the top players, they mostly have hangers (don't know about teleporters), and hardly any has turrets. Every player looks at how to beat others and develops their own style. Otherwise it would be too boring fighting the same over and over. If you look at the penny ante ships, these seem to be cookie cutter designs Take a look at the dps in the squid files
