If you’re struggling with the new single player ground missions, it may be because they require a different approach than the old ground missions. In the old missions the most effective strategy was to defend as much as possible, but that doesn’t work very well with the new mission style. One alternative that does seem to be effective, building your strategy around special abilities, will be described here. (You can find a guide for the old ground missions here.)
Unlike the old missions, you take damage even when you’re defending, making defense a much less viable strategy. Another key difference is that charging no longer increases your attack skill. Instead, it charges your special ability, which you can use as many times as you want by recharging it after you’ve used it.
First, you’ll need to choose crew for your mission. In the old ground missions this was a simple matter of picking the crew with the highest hp, maybe giving some consideration to attack skill. For the new missions, choose your best healing rain crew as well as two crew with good gas or crit skill (ideally two good gassers). Because special ability can be used repeatedly, hp is a lot less important for these missions. Choosing crew with decent hp is a good idea but they really only need to be able to survive a few attacks at a time.
Once the mission starts the first thing you’ll want to do is charge your special ability for all three crew. Once the enemy crew have chosen their actions, use your special for both gas/crit crew. A crew with a high gas skill can clear the entire room with one attack, and a high crit skill can kill the enemy crew in a single attack. When it’s time to choose an action for your healer, you’ll likely want to select attack on the first round. If you don’t use the special ability charge it will carry over into the next round of attacks, so save it for when your crew health starts to drop. With good gas/crit crew you may find that you don’t need to heal at all, but it’s a nice option to have available if the need does arise*. If you’re using unique crew you may find that you need to use your healer’s ability pretty frequently, but as long as your crew are leveled well for your hull level you should have no trouble surviving long enough to heal. Continue to alternate between charging and using your special ability for your gas/crit crew. Only choose attack for these crew if you can kill an enemy with a single attack (this will save your charge for the next round).
And...that’s basically it. Repeat until you’ve completed the mission, and enjoy your rewards!
* This guide is meant to provide a strategy that will work well for everyone. If you're lucky enough to have three strong gassers (eg zombies) you may find that it's easier to just skip the healer and blast your way through the new ground missions by gassing everything in your path. Similarly, if you have a lot of high hp crew you might find that you don't really need a healer. In that case choose your best gassers and/or critters, or just choose your highest hp crew and attack repeatedly.
