Introduction to AI Guide
The command room is required to edit/add AI to the programmable features of the game. Each level upgrade for the room adds the total number of lines allowed to be programmed. As you need to have the command room installed on your ship to PROGRAM ai, it is not required to be on your ship to RUN ai (currently). So when you need to play around with your ai, place the command room on your ship (usually by swapping it with another room temporarily like a reactor or laser, just don't forget to put the system back!), program your ai, remove it, and battle on!
A note about AI.
If your account's ship was not already level 6 or higher as of May 25th, you will need to do new Python research in the Lab to have full access to the AI Conditions and Actions.
If your ship *was* already level 6 or higher by that date, your research was "grandfathered in" if you already had the appropriate Lab levels.
Below are the Conditions and Actions made available by Python research, the level of Python at which they become available, as well as the Lab level those researches become available.
There has been a recent balance change to the Command Room (CMD), effective as of the update released on 06/28.
Before, the max level for CMD was level 3, and level 2 or 3 were no different from level 1. Now, CMD can be upgraded as high as level 9, depending on your ship level. Each level of CMD now has its own capacity for the amount of lines of AI you can program.
***IMPORTANT***
If you had previously programmed an amount of lines of AI that now exceeds your CMD's capacity, it will *still function as is* as long as you do not edit it. If you edit it, any lines of AI exceeding your CMD's capacity will no longer be there and you will be unable to program more until your CMD is upgraded.
Below, you can see information about CMD levels 1-9. It is possible that Savy will soon increase the max level of CMD again, to level 12, but this has not happened yet.

Python is the name given to the research required to add additional condition and targets to grow with the rooms as they are available with your ship, and also to give more control on how you can program.
The Following are all the current conditions available for AI programming. The targets will match the rooms at the same level of Python research and for the Hanger and Missiles you will also have the ability to set ammo types.
