A quick note on Captains...
With the content patch in May of 2018, Savy has completely revamped the ship captain options. Where as before each faction could pick from 6 different captains (male/female and a defining characteristic of Awesome, etc. each with their own ability and stats), now each faction is given one captain stat set with some VERY minor differences and a shared ability but a different look depending on which one you prefer more. Below are the new captains and the stats associated with each.
Now... a general breakdown on crew! There are 7 "rarities" of crew you can acquire in PSS:
Common *
Elite **
Unique ***
Epic ****
Hero *****
Special ******
Legendary *******
For our intents and purposes, completely disregard that Commons or Elites even exist. The only crew you want to keep are going to be Unique, Epic, Hero, Special, and Legendary.
4* and up crew are obtained by Beer draws (Bux draws), Dropship sales, Store sales, starbux sales, and also the Captain you picked at the start of your journey, is a Special (6*) crew.
Unique (3*) crew are all obtainable, and should only be obtained, by the mineral or gas draws. These are the crew you will typically spend a lot of time, upon joining Militia, drawing for. They are solid crew until later on when you can pick up some better ones, and even when you do you'll still find yourself usually leaning on some Unique crew.
That said, not ALL Unique (3*) crew are good ones (or even some 4* or 5*)…in fact, some are pretty bad, and it all comes down to stats (more on the breakdown of how we grade good crew at the end).
For ease of filling your ship with guaranteed quality crew, see the image attached to this post.
A final note: while doing mineral or gas draws to find these crew, be sure to fire any Commons, Elites, or Uniques not shown here, in order to keep your draw cost low.
If you have crew not on the sheet, regard that crew's * rarity and whether you should keep them. Some of you may have capitalized on a good Dropship, or Store sale, or availed yourself of the Beer draw and got lucky. Be absolutely certain the crew is not worth having before you fire them! Do not fire any 4* or up crew, you will regret that later. Some are not great by any means and are not recommended for active duty on your ship, but harder to come by crew like them can be used for something called "Prestige" much later. Also, having multiples of a crew is not a bad thing at all, just weigh the value of having multiples of them on your ship, and what their purposes are. This isn't Pokémon, you are not expected to get one of each. Some crew it can be worth while to have more than one on your ship if you can draw them.
Currently available crew from the mineral/gas draw that are recommended keepers. These crew are not necessarily the only ones that may be good for your ship. With SO many crew available and more being released all the time, many share a lot of values and may look almost identical. These recommended are just an assortment that represent most of the higher stats for the 3* Unique crew. There is something to be said about many other crew though so don't think you HAVE to have only these. Look at the crew you draw, evaluate them based on your needs and decide to keep or release them. It's your ship! We can help you but in the end it will always be up to you on where to take it!

A little note on crew ...
It is ESSENTIAL that you replace all crew not included in our recommended list (in the photo albums) before you graduate. It is also important that you understand why ..
STATS!
Stats make the difference between crew members.
HP is incredibly important and anything less than 6 is not good.
Sometimes .. other stats trade off against HP to make a lower stat acceptable, but chances are, unless you are a regular at the beer draw, 6HP is the minimum you are looking for.
6HP is the base score.
8HP is good
10+ is great.
ATK is the crew vs crew attack strength.
RPR is the crew's room repair score.
3.0+ are good scores here.
Ability is the crew's special ability score. It effects how strong the gas or critical attack is or how much time is shaved off a rooms reload speed with rush, how long an enemy room stays hacked etc. Different abilities have different scores but again .. the higher the number the better. Pay attention to them. Our crew are the best freebies available in each given field.
Stamina determines how long your crew member can sprint around before tiring.
Stats on the right hand side show that crew's skill stats. The higher the number, the better that crew is at that particular job. (*research skill does not work, ignore it).
12.0 is the base score you're looking for here.
Weapon, Shield, Engine and Pilot skills buff that rooms reload speed. Having a skilled crew or two or three, working a room can really make a difference in battle. As your weapons fire quicker and shield charges faster etc.
12.0 is the base.18.0 is good.
**These stats can be increased by levelling crew and by using armour and weapons in the crew equipment slots. Gym training can also be used to buff the stats on the left hand side.
A strong base level is important! Don't waste gas and xp levelling crew with a weak base score. ARMADA members have struggled through months of trial and error testing to establish the recommended list. It is easily achievable from the mineral draw [store > crew] if you have the guts for the grind.
It's all about the numbers. Just because a crew had the same skill or is Jesus .. doesn't mean you should keep them.
***This is a basic guide, based on graduation criteria. More complicated crew arrangements, including prestige will be something you can learn post-grad.
****When drawing crew.. make sure you start by firing all non-recommended currently on board. Draw > fire > repeat .. until you find a keeper to bank. Repeat. One by one, until you have a full crew plus a couple extra, for when you level up. This keeps the cost of drawing new crew to a minimum, since it increases with each crew on board.
The earlier you start.. the easier it will be. We screwed this up .. you don't have to.
